If you will notice Miscrosoft Excel 2007 is using a different extension and it is .XLS insteald of .XLS which was commonly used in older versions on MS Excel.

There is this common problems on exchanging of spreadsheet files between Excel 2007 users and other Excel version users. Typically .XLSX cannot be opened on older versions including MS Excel 2003.

With this growing problems, Microsoft has just launched Microsoft Office Compatibilty Pack which can make things easier for both users of old MS Office versions. Just download and install the said compatibilty pack and problems are gone.

It is advised to let other older users of old version to download and install the pack otherwise they will have troubles accessing the Excel files. One thing to get around with this is to “SAVEAS” the document before sending it to others. Currently most compatible version is MS Excel 97-2003.
